Saturday, February 7th, 2009Alright, here is the deal. E needs thickened formula for at least the next couple weeks. We have done some serious web-searching, phone-calling, nurse-asking, trial-and-error research. The formula (thickened with SimplyThick Nectar additive) once mixed has an enormous number of small suspended bubbles. The number of bubbles is all about how you make it though. The nurse told us to shake the formula, nectar and water in the bottle. This is the worst solution. The best solution is not very difficult and goes like this:
1) Boil water (if directed by doctor) in a large pyrex.
2) Add nectar per directions (no need to let it cool according to SimplyThick, but we give it a minute or so).
3) Run mixer for a minute or so – just make sure it is well mixed.
3) Let cool for 5-10 minutes. Both so you don’t ‘burn’ the powder formula and to let some of the bubbles out.
4) Add powder (we use 22 cal Enfamil) while running the mixer. Run mixer until well mixed (2-3 minutes)
5) Immediately pour off into the bottles for 24 hours of storage.
The KEY to this whole thing is the mixer blade that we use. The picture shows the curly blade, and we only use ONE of the blades. This single-curl mixer does not induce near the number of bubbles.
